2003/4Magazine / Spring 2003Forgotten Buildings: Detached kitchens in S.E England / A long article by David Martin on detached kitchens. Research by the UCL Field Archaeology Unit shows that detached kitchens were, after houses and barns, the most common type of building during C15 & 16. Few survive, mostly from 1450-1550. Surprisingly large and complex, often with 2 storeys. Sometimes included bakehouses and dairies. Detailed survey of Robertsbridge Manor made in 1567 shows 43 out of 123 houses had detached kitchens. 15 surviving kitchens identified in Eastern Sussex, typically 8m to 11.5m long and 5.25 m to 6.3m wide. All except one have at least one upper chamber. Examples at Littlebrook, Wartling, Mountfield. Some were incorporated into main body of the house in late C16, eg at Gate House Farm in Ewhurst.
